Aegisub is a free, cross-platform open source tool for creating and modifying subtitles. Aegisub makes it quick and easy to time subtitles to audio, and features many powerful tools for styling them, including a built-in real-time video preview.

Note: Unlike previous versions, 3.0.4 is fairly stable and mostly functional on OS X. However, there are still some broken things and it is still the least-tested platform.
Note: The Debian/Ubuntu should work in any relatively recent Debian-based distribution. However, it is somewhat experimental. Please report any issues with installing it.
